How to Make Coasters with Decoupage, Spray Paint & Acrylic

This project is perfect if you want coasters that look handmade, colorful, and uniquely artistic. We’ll use a mix of decoupage, spray paint, and acrylic paint—you can use all three or just one, depending on your style.

What You’ll Need

  • Wooden coasters
  • Decoupage papers (napkin designs or printed sheets)
  • Paintbrushes
  • Decoupage lacquer/glue
  • Spray paint (any color)
  • Acrylic paint
  • Masking tape

Step 1 — Decoupage Layer

  1. Choose the decoupage paper you want.
  2. Cut it to the size of the coaster surface.
  3. Brush a medium layer of decoupage glue onto the coaster.
  4. Press the paper onto it gently.
  5. Brush another layer of glue on top to seal it.

Repeat until the whole surface is covered.
Let it dry for 1 hour.

Step 2 — Spray Paint Design

  1. Take masking tape and cover any areas you want to keep unpainted.
  2. Spray a light coat across the uncovered part.
  3. Let it dry between coats — 2 layers is ideal, but add more if needed.
  4. Allow the coasters to dry completely (a few hours to a full day).

This gives a crisp color-block or stripe pattern.

Step 3 — Acrylic Paint Accents

Now add the finishing touches.

  1. Apply masking tape again to mark the area you want to paint.
  2. Paint with acrylic — do at least 2 coats for solid color.
  3. Once dry, use a thin brush to clean up border lines if needed.

This lets you add bold colors, thin lines, or geometric shapes.

Finished!

You now have custom, vibrant coasters with a mix of texture, color, and your own artistic touch.
